Daniel 1 First Lesson
1. In the third year of the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
2. The Lord gave King Jehoiakim of Judah into his power, as well as some of the vessels of the house of God. These he brought to the land of Shinar, and he placed the vessels in the treasury of his gods.
3. Then the king commanded his palace master Ashpenaz to bring some of the Israelites of the royal family and of the nobility:
4. young men without physical defect and handsome, versed in every branch of wisdom, endowed with knowledge and insight, and competent to serve in the king’s palace; they were to be taught the literature and language of the Chaldeans.
5. The king assigned them a daily portion of the royal rations of food and wine. They were to be educated for three years, so that at the end of that time they could be stationed in the king’s court.
6. Among them were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, from the tribe of Judah.
7. The palace master gave them other names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
8. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the royal rations of food and wine, so he asked the palace master to allow him not to defile himself.
9. Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion from the palace master.
10. The palace master said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king; he has appointed your food and your drink. If he should see you in poorer condition than the other young men of your age, you would endanger my head with the king.”
11. Then Daniel asked the guard whom the palace master had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
12. “Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.
13. You can then compare our appearance with the appearance of the young men who eat the royal rations and deal with your servants according to what you observe.”
14. So he agreed to this proposal and tested them for ten days.
15. At the end of ten days it was observed that they appeared better and fatter than all the young men who had been eating the royal rations.
16. So the guard continued to withdraw their royal rations and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables.
17. To these four young men God gave knowledge and skill in every aspect of literature and wisdom; Daniel also had insight into all visions and dreams.
18. At the end of the time that the king had set for them to be brought in, the palace master brought them into the presence of Nebuchadnezzar,
19. and the king spoke with them. Among them all, no one was found to compare with Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they were stationed in the king’s court.
20. In every matter of wisdom and understanding concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
21. And Daniel continued there until the first year of King Cyrus.

Ephesians 6:10-18 Second Lesson
10. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power;
11. put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil,
12. for our struggle is not against blood and flesh but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
13. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on the evil day and, having prevailed against everything, to stand firm.
14. Stand, therefore, and belt your waist with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness
15. and lace up your sandals in preparation for the gospel of peace.
16. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.

Philippians 3:7-14 Epistle
7. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ.
8. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
9. and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith.
10. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death,
11. if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Pressing toward the Goal
12. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
13. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
14. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.

Luke 19:1-10 Gospel
1. He entered Jericho and was passing through it.
2. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.
3. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature.
4. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.
5. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.”
6. So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.
7. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”
8. Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.”
9. Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
10. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.” The Parable of the Ten Pounds
