Lectionary Theme: Call to be compassionate / Second Sunday of the Lent

    4. Just then Boaz came from Bethlehem. He said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you.” They answered, “The Lord bless you.”

    5. Then Boaz said to his servant who was in charge of the reapers, “To whom does this young woman belong?”

    6. The servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, “She is the Moabite who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab.

    7. She said, ‘Please, let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the reapers.’ So she came, and she has been on her feet from early this morning until now, without resting even for a moment.”

    8. Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women.

    9. Keep your eyes on the field that is being reaped, and follow behind them. I have ordered the young men not to bother you. If you get thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn.”

    10. Then she fell prostrate, with her face to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your sight, that you should take notice of me, when I am a foreigner?”

    11. But Boaz answered her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before.

    12. May the Lord reward you for your deeds, and may you have a full reward from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge!”

    13. Then she said, “May I continue to find favor in your sight, my lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, even though I am not one of your servants.”

    14. At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come here, and eat some of this bread, and dip your morsel in the sour wine.” So she sat beside the reapers, and he heaped up for her some parched grain. She ate until she was satisfied, and she had some left over.

    15. When she got up to glean, Boaz instructed his young men, “Let her glean even among the standing sheaves, and do not reproach her.

    16. You must also pull out some handfuls for her from the bundles, and leave them for her to glean, and do not rebuke her.”

    17. So she gleaned in the field until evening. Then she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.

    18. She picked it up and came into the town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gleaned. Then she took out and gave her what was left over after she herself had been satisfied.

    19. Her mother-in-law said to her, “Where did you glean today? And where have you worked? Blessed be the man who took notice of you.” So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, “The name of the man with whom I worked today is Boaz.”

    20. Then Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “Blessed be he by the Lord, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” Naomi also said to her, “The man is a relative of ours, one of our nearest kin.”

    25. So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another.

    26. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

    27. and do not make room for the devil.

    28. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy.

    29. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear.

    30. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption.

    31. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice,

    32. and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

    13. Do not be astonished, brothers and sisters, that the world hates you.

    14. We know that we have passed from death to life because we love one another. Whoever does not love abides in death.

    15. All who hate a brother or sister are murderers, and you know that murderers do not have eternal life abiding in them.

    16. We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another.

    17. How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?

    18. Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.

    19. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him

    20. whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

    21. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God;

    22. and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.

    23. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

    24. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

    40. A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.”

    41. Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!”

    42. Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.

    43. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once,

    44. saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

    45. But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.
